Course Description

 

This course is designed to provide the students with experience in marching and performing at concerts and festivals.  The students will also gain valuable skills to effectively rehearse in a musical group, self-criticism, and artistic principles of musical expression.

 

Course Objectives

 

It is assumes that the students taking this course have had previous music experience.  This class is not for the beginning instrumentalist.  Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to demonstrate the following skills:

 

1.      Technical skills of performing on their instrument

2.      Aspects of artistic musical performance

3.      Skills in rehearsal preparation and procedures

4.      Evaluation skills

5.      Leadership skills

6.      Teaming skills

7.      History, theory, and style applications in music

 

Course Structure

 

The format of this course will be music rehearsals, lectures, and sectional rehearsals.

 

Text and Required Materials

 

  • Each student must have a pencil at all rehearsals
  • Each student must have an instrument in good working condition
  • Each student must have their music fro every rehearsal and performance
  • Each student playing an instrument that requires a reed should have at least three (3) extra good reeds at all times.  NO RICO REEDS!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Each brass student is to have valve oil
  • Each brass student must have appropriate mutes.  Some school mutes are available for the larger instruments

 

Course Outline

 

This course is structured to isolate and improve communication in concerns to music preparation, ear training, score marking and interpretation.  The following aspects will be studied:


1.      Musical rehearsal

2.      Ensemble balance/ tone/intonation

3.      Music articulation

4.      Music phrasing and note-grouping

5.      Music Terminology

6.      Festivals

7.      Major/Minor scales

8.      Music History

9.      Style Characteristics

 


 


Evaluation Method

 

            70%                 of the grade will be based in regular rehearsal attendance, attitude,

and preparation

30%                 of the grade will be based on the member’s musical improvement.

                                    (Scales, etudes, class assignments, technique, and tests)

 

Grading Policy

 

Students will be graded using a point system.

  • 20 points per class day
  • 100 points per football games
  • 200 points per festival
  • Tardies will result in a 5 point deduction per occurrence
  • Not having and instrument or participating in class will be a 10 point deduction per occurrence

 

Course Policies

 

  • Regular attendance is required
  • Regular evaluation in class is impossible to reschedule
  • All written assignments must be typed
  • Performances are considered a test.
  • If a student is going to miss a performance of any kind, Dr. Bennett is to be notified in writing two weeks prior of the performance that is going to be missed unless it is an emergency.  If the absence is unexcused it will result in a grade of F.
